Secretive Russia to declassify army map: official
MOSCOW: Russia may boast fewer secrets in the near future as the government prepares to declassify secret topographic maps used by the Russian military, an official said on Saturday. Several environmental groups and businesses have in previous years found themselves in hot water with the Federal Security Service, the successor to the Soviet-era KGB, for breaching secrecy laws by possessing what the service said were classified maps. Efforts to declassify secret maps were “in full swing” and the government was even prepared to make public its top secret large-scale map used by the Russian army, Yevgeny Dolgov, a research associate with the Russian defense ministry, said in rare comments on Russian radio. afp
